The Handheld PC 2000 platform supports two CPU, MIPS and StrongARM, for far-reaching wireless connectivity the Handheld PC 2000 has a longer battery life than PPC. Also a number of new features and applications have been added to the Handheld PC 2000, including a thin client application (Windows 2000 Terminal Services Client) that provides access to full desktop PC applications running on Windows 2000 Server using Terminal Services. Windows Media (WMA) or MP3 music can now be played on the Handheld PC 2000 with the Windows Media Player. The Pocket Internet Explorer has been upgraded to the corresponding of Internet Explorer 4.0 on the desktop, which includes support for HTML 4.0, XML/XSL, DHTML, and animated GIF. The capabilities of the Internet Explorer 4.0 for Handheld PC 2000 will be explained in greater detail in the Chapter "Internet Explorer 4.0 for H/PC 2000".

Regarding the user interface, Microsoft decided to stay with the Handheld PC Pro (Windows CE 2.XX) for the Handheld PC 2000, instead to moving to the new PPC interface, because the usage models are very much associated with a desktop.
